Case Study 1: Emigrating when participating in a clinical trial

Based on the challenges presented, the primary issues can be summarised as follows:

  1. On-Site Infusion: Finding a hotel that would allow the infusion procedure to take place on-site was a unique requirement.

  2. Flexible Check-In/Check-Out: Securing early check-in and/or late check-out to accommodate the lengthy infusion process was crucial.

  3. Proximity to Border: Identifying a hotel near the border was essential for easy travel by car.

This clearly outlines the logistical hurdles involved in ensuring the patient could continue their clinical trial infusions after relocating.

A patient had been participating in a clinical trial for several years, with visits to the main site every six months and fortnightly home infusions. After emigrating to a neighbouring country where home infusions weren't available, Rare Disease Research Partners (RDRP) were tasked with finding a suitable location near the border of both countries to continue the patient's fortnightly infusions.

Background

Understanding the Core Challenges

We provided extensive support to the family, addressing each of their challenges:

  1. Suitable Accommodation: Successfully securing a hotel near the border that met the patient's specific needs, including on-site infusions and flexible check-in/check-out times.

  2. Negotiated Terms: The ability to negotiate favorable terms with the hotel demonstrates effective communication and problem-solving skills.

  3. Enhanced Comfort: Arranging early check-in, late check-out, and a complimentary breakfast provided additional comfort and convenience for the patient.

Key Achievements

By securing suitable accommodations and negotiating favourable terms, the team was able to ensure that the patient could continue their clinical trial infusions without interruption.
